Step Team
Can you clap and stomp at the same time? If so, Step Team is for you.
The Step Club originated in November 1994 by student Gabrielle Walker, who was the club’s first president, and at that time was moderated by Ms. Doris Smith as part of the SWAAA (Sisters Working for African-American Awareness) Club. It performed through 1996.
Step Team was revived as a separate club in 2006 by students Diane Baker, Tosin Soyege, and Angela Akoto (Class of 2009) and continues today.
The team usually consists of ten members, and everyone is welcome to audition. Practices are held after school on a weekly or as-needed basis.
Led by veteran steppers, team members create their own rhythmic patterns of synchronized clapping and stepping based on a theme. They perform at sports pep rallies and have created skits for the school variety show and school fundraising events.
The club moderator is Ms. Jo Ellen Thiel. |
