STAR Day
STAR Day is an annual school-wide reading event held every September.
Each spring, a committee of faculty, staff and students gather to select the STAR book for the following academic year.
The committee accepts recommendations from Scholasticans who are free to nominate books from almost any genre. Past STAR books have included novels (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian), science fiction/fantasy (The Hunger Games), biography (Ella Fitzgerald: Up Close), prose-poetry (Witness), and even a graphic novel (Persepolis).
Once selected, copies of the STAR book are handed out to current students and incoming freshmen, and the reading begins.
On STAR Day, Scholasticans meet in small groups to discuss the book, ending the day with an all-school assembly for more discussion or a presentation. Author Samantha Abeel was the special guest in 2007 when her memoir was the STAR book. A local graphic artist made a presentation for Persepolis in 2008, and songster Frieda Lee performed the songs of Ella Fitzgerald in 2010.
Various classes include the STAR book as part of the curriculum. STAR book projects have included artwork, videos, board games, posters and time lines. |
