St. Scholastica Academy

Science Department

Biology courses are taught at the college preparatory level. In addition, Advanced Biology I and II are taught to International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificate candidates during junior and senior years; biology is the science of concentration in the IB curriculum.

Chemistry is taught at the college preparatory and honors levels, as is physics. Geophysics is another option in the science curriculum. All science courses are college preparatory.

There is a high emphasis on laboratory experiences in the science curriculum. Analysis and interpretation of lab experiences through mandatory formal lab reports help students develop and foster critical thinking skills.

Anatomy Class students have presented prepared lessons and activities to students at St. Margaret Mary School. IB Biology students have created projects which have been displayed at the Shedd Aquarium. The biology classes are also working on other projects dealing with the health industry and environmental issues.

The faculty members are part of the National Science Teachers Association. The biology teacher also belongs to the National Association of Biology Teachers. As part of their continuing education, all science teachers attend continuing education meetings and seminars, such as the Vernier workshop on technology in the classroom, scientific literacy workshops at the Notebaert Nature Museum, the Texas Instruments Math and Science Conference and the National Science Teachers Association National conference.

The science students go on multidiscipline field trips for data collection and analysis of many factors of the Chicago River.

Textbooks are reviewed and constantly updated to include the most current scientific discoveries.

Science students annually enter the Region 2 Science Fair and represent St. Scholastica Academy at the State Science Fair in Champaign, Illinois, regularly earning "outstanding" ratings. Recent years’ entries merited awards from the United States Army and Navy/Marine Corps, Best in Category award, and Illinois State Water Reclamation award to name a few.

Mr. John Denman

Mr. John Denman attended Illinois Institute of Technology where he received his Bachelor of Science in Physics while serving as president of the Fencing Society and having a prominent role with the college radio station. He Denman was awarded a full tuition waiver and a teaching assistantship position for graduate studies at DePaul University, where he taught physics labs for several classes for science and non-science majors. He is currently finishing his M.S. in Physics at DePaul University. His dissertation focuses on cosmology and the study of quasar clustering evolution at high redshifts.

Mr. Denman joined the Science Department of St. Scholastica Academy in 2007. He teaches physics and chemistry and is the director of the annual Science Fair.

Mr. Denman moderates the Astronomy Club.

Mr. Josh Wiechert

Mr. Josh Wiechert received a Bachelor of Science degree from Southeast Missouri State University with a Major in Geology and a Minor in Physics. His teaching certification is from Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis. He has received a Masters of Education in Instructional Technology from Southwest Baptist University, and is currently working on a M.S. in Zoology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Mr. Wiechert joined the faculty at SSA in 2011. He brings a wide teaching experience to Scholasticans, having taught high school physics teacher, 8th grade science, and four years of middle school instructional technology.

As an Instruction Technology Specialist, Mr. Wiechert has presented at four Illinois Educational Technology Conferences and two Midwest Educational Technology Conference. He has also attended three National Science Teacher Conventions and Three Illinois Computers in Education Conferences.

Mr. Wiechert teaches Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Chemistry and IB Biology. His famous classroom mascot is a Rose Hair Tarantula who is good friends with his small daughter Ellie.

Mr. Wiechert is the moderator for the STEM Club and the head coach of the Track and Field team.
