St. Scholastica Academy

Peer Mediators

Peer Mediation Training

St. Scholastica Academy offers peer mediation as a means of resolving conflicts between students. Mediations take place in a comfortable, safe and confidential setting, and are led by two trained student mediators. Along with the student disputants and the student mediators, the School Social Worker, Ms. Holzhauer, is present at all mediations.

For 20 years, peer mediation has served a vital role in resolving student conflicts at the academy. Peer mediation empowers students to actively resolve their relational conflicts, and through mediation students learn simple, effective conflict resolution strategies that can be applied in all areas of their life. Unlike standard disciplinary methods, such as detention or suspension, peer mediation works to resolve the actual conflict, making for a more peaceful school environment.

Peer Mediator leader: Ms. Elizabeth Holzhauer

Peer Mediators are juniors and seniors who are nominated by faculty and staff for the position. They then receive intensive training from the Counseling Dept.

The training for our Peer Mediators was held on Thursday, September 1, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, Friday, September 2, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and Tuesday, September 7, from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM.

Student Support Groups

In addition to Peer Mediators, the Counseling Department also organizes Student Support Groups. Participation in a support group is open to all Scholasticans. Each semester, students can sign up to join the groups which meet on a regular basis during abc and defg morning mods. There is one group per grade level.

Student support groups begin the week of September 12 and end the week of December 5. Groups offer an opportunity for students to talk confidentially with their peers about academic, social, familial or personal issues. Ms. Holzhauer, the School Social Worker, facilitates all student support groups.
